HANTMAN'S ESTATES AUCTION Sunday, May 20, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cabin John VFW Hall Potomac, MD EXHIBITION:
Lot 454 | ||||||||
| ||||||||
Spring will be an exciting time at Hantmans when the Elizabeth Gordon Norcross estate passes under the auctioneers gavel. Ms. Norcross was an influential editor at House Beautiful for more than 20 years, a post which she took over in 1939. It was after the publication of her views on the International Style (The Threat to the Next America) that she caught the attention of Frank Lloyd Wright. Thereafter, he became her mentor and friend and she devoted two issues to Wright keeping the architect in the public eye. In the sale is a large eight-panel cabinet, polychrome decorated with a jungle motif, that matches the bed Wright designed for she and her husband. A companion 1950s Edward Fields rug from the same room is also in the sale. Another lot of interest is a three-piece contemporary cabinet suite stamped with the Frank Lloyd Wright monogram. Also, a picnic basket she and Frank Lloyd used together in Central Park over the years will also be sold.
Other property in this estate reflects Norcross interest in understated resonance and serenity in designshibui, evident in the decorations in her own home. Soft contemporary decorations were throughout her home and included Japanese and Chinese ceramics, textiles, baskets, and metal; Mexican antiquities, and textiles. In addition to the Norcross estate, this auction will feature property from other Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland estates and collectors. Highlights include two beautiful early 19th century convex mirrors. One with an ebonized eagle crest, labeled Thoman Fentham; the other has an unusual carved giltwood entwined snake crest. Bidders at the May 20th auction will find more than 700 lots of 18th-20th century American, European and Oriental furniture, fine art and decorations. Collections include American and European silver, Persian rugs, a large collection English Staffordshire and pottery, needleworks, two KPM plaques, a large group of jewelry, a large collection of 18th-19th century boxes and miniature cabinets, lap desks, etc., garden ornaments, and a large collection of War posters (World War I and World War II).
